Why all this Lego?

Why all this Lego? Lego® Serious Play® Workshop in Amman (Jordan)

Ever wondered about the many Lego® figures on this website? Why all this Lego? The famous bricks and figures run through the whole domain for a good reason: The use of the Danish plastic is so diverse that I use it in Creating, Consulting and Coaching. Not exclusively of course, but selectively in all 3Cs.

Creating

It is easiest to imagine the standardized blocks and accessories in the field of creativity. But why? Working with Lego® appeals not only to four of the five senses (ok, some also take it in the mouth), but above all to our subconscious. The connection between hand and brain in particular has not yet been fully researched. However, it has been shown that the sensors have a large ramification in our minds.

Have you ever forgotten your credit card PIN? Let your fingers remember it! Just start typing and watch what combination of numbers your hand heads for. This almost always works. Now the hand doesn’t have its own memory, but it shows how far the subconscious mind interacts with the hands. And this is exactly what happens in reverse when you take Lego building blocks in your hand, turn them, put them together, etc. Unconscious processes are triggered that we would not have been able to trigger in any other way.

Now, however, in the professional field we do not only want to play, but to produce results. Therefore, we enable one the methodical and structured approach of Lego® Serious Play®. This implicitly includes the right problem definition in order to create creative solutions that meet the needs.

Consulting

But Serious Play® goes far beyond that. It was originally invented for strategy formulation. The principal owner of Lego at the time, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, was dissatisfied with the process and results of a strategy workshop. As a result, he teamed up with the International Institute for Management Development (IIMD) in Lausanne. The resulting method was Lego® Serious Play®, which was introduced to the public in 2002. It has been open source since 2010, and it makes sense for a facilitator to be trained in the process. Because only with the right application does the true potential come to fruition.

Lego can also be used to communicate better with each other. This is because the Lego® Serious Play® method also includes storytelling. This also tickles out the valuable thoughts of introverts and highly sensitive people.

And communication processes can be illustrated and redesigned. This already brings us to the area of analysis. If one gets stuck as an analyst, the spatial representation practically always helps. Synthesis, i.e. the construction of the facts, is exactly the opposite of analysis. If I put something together, it becomes clear to me which parts I need, i.e. into which parts I have to break it down (=analysis).

Coaching

But coaching? Yes, also coaching! Because the Lego® figures and other elements are excellent for constellations. You will be amazed how quickly and easily coachees can put themselves into the situation and emotional world. I often use Playmobil for this purpose, because then it is even easier. The figures are larger and more human-like. In any case, the game pieces and figures open up emotional access to situations and thus to solutions.

Lego® offline and online

By the way, Lego® Serious Play® can also be used online. To do this, each participant receives a corresponding building set at home in advance, and they build simultaneously while everyone sits in front of the screen.
